As explained above (see Chapter I.2), investment law is shaped by a variety of treaties. In addition to bilateral treaties, mostly bilateral investment treaties (BITs), there are regional treaties such as the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), the Dominican Republic–Central America–United States Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA), and the Energy Charter Treaty (ECT).
